Plant Patents

Looking for Plant Patents? They’ve moved to their new home on the first floor!

“Wait, what are plant patents?” Aside from super cool, they’re one way that plant breeders and geneticists protect intellectual property related to asexually reproducing plants. Here’s the lowdown from the USPTO, the governmental body that grants patents in the United States.

Wendt Library collects and binds physical copies of plant patents. These are important to best represent accuracy of the color photography that describes the innovation. As an example, check out this recently granted plant patent and look at the PDF images.

If you’re curious about patents, or plant patents in particular, read our Patents Research Guide or Ask a Wendt Librarian.
