Copyright Statement

The libraries provide public access to a wide range of material, including online exhibits, digitized collections, archival finding aids, our catalog, online articles, and a growing range of materials in many media.

When possible, we provide rights information in catalog records, finding aids, and other metadata that accompanies collections or items. However, it is always the user’s obligation to evaluate copyright and rights issues in light of their own use.

If you have questions or concerns about the library’s use of a work, please visit the Library’s Take-Down Policy.

Website Content Created by Library Staff

Except where otherwise noted, materials authored by General Library System staff that appear on our website fall under a Creative Commons CC-BY license, and you are free to reproduce or use them, provided you give attribution to the University of Wisconsin Libraries. Please note that the CC-BY license does not apply to materials for which the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System does not hold copyright.

The license does not apply to the WordPress theme or plugins used by the site, or to the PDFs and other embedded media created by staff from other parts of the University. It applies only to the text of the pages and posts created by University of Wisconsin-Madison General Library System employees for use on this site and rendered in HTML. If portions of HTML text on the site are not covered by the license, or if embedded non-HTML media is covered by the license, that will be indicated on the relevant page or media.

The license also does not apply to photographs that contain easily identifiable images of students, faculty, or staff or to photographs provided by UW-Madison’s University Communications.
