Library Timeline for Consolidation Consolidation Activities Status as of November 2019
Astronomy Library (Woodman) 2019-2020
  • Collection analysis and clean-up underway beginning Spring 2019, with remaining collections processed during Spring and Summer 2020. Active collections will be relocated to a combined library in the current Physics Library space, and inactive collections moved to a shelving facility.
  • Library space will close to the public in late May 2020.
  • Future plans for student-focused space closely coordinated by the Astronomy Department, as well as the College of Letters & Science.

Business Learning Commons 2017 - 2018
  • Collaboration with Wisconsin School of Business to create the new Business Learning Commons on three levels of Grainger Hall.
  • Collections footprint reduced to allow for greater study, learning, and collaboration space.
  • Additional collections consolidated into Verona Shelving Facility.

Chemistry Library 2016 - 2019
  • Space will be transformed into the Chemistry Information Commons, which will include reference and consultation space for the Chemistry Librarian.
  • Library space closed in May 2018. Liaison services will be relocated within the Chemistry Building.
  • Collections relocated to Steenbock Library and the Verona Shelving Facility.

Geography Library 2017 - 2018
  • The space will be repurposed to meet the changing needs of the Geography Department.
  • Library closed December 2017.
  • Collections consolidated to enhance relevant collections at several libraries across campus. Inactive material relocated to Verona Shelving Facility.

Math Library (Kleene) 2019-2020
  • Collection analysis and clean-up underway throughout 2019, with remaining collections processed during Spring 2020. Active collections will be relocated to a combined library in the current Physics Library space, and inactive collections moved to a shelving facility.
  • Library space will close to the public December 23, 2019.
  • Plans for a Math Institute space are being closely coordinated by the Math Department, as well as the College of Letters & Science.

Memorial Library Ongoing
  • Strategic planning for collections underway, including the ongoing integration of consolidated materials.
  • Deduplication of discipline-specific materials held in the consolidated Astronomy, Mathematics, and Physics (AMP) Library.
  • Microformat consolidation project centralizes campus collections, machines, and services related to microformats into Memorial Library in an effort to make it more convenient for researchers to use these materials.

  • Collections consolidated into Verona Shelving Facility, as well as Kohler Art Library and Special Collections.
  • Space redesigned into a gallery supporting academic program needs.
  • Development of new liaison support model for academic departments. Design Studies liaison support shifted to Kohler Art Library in 2018.
Collections work completed; liaison services ongoing.
Steenbock Library Ongoing
  • Strategic evaluation of collections to create space for incoming active materials from Veterinary Medicine, Chemistry, Geography, and Wendt, as well as the relocation of Design Studies material to Kohler Art Library.
  • Realignment of services to focus on science & engineering fields.

Social Science Reference Library 2019
  • Liaison services, including instructional support and research assistance, ongoing.
  • Limited collections work will occur prior to the library closure in May 2019, with remaining collections processed Summer 2019.
  • College of Letters & Science will work with the Economics Department for future use of the space.

Veterinary Medicine Reading Room May 2016
  • Space was repurposed to create the student-focused Renk Learning Center, which opened in Spring 2017.
  • Concentrated collections moved to Steenbock Library.

Wendt Commons Library 2016-2019
  • Wendt Commons Library merged with GLS in July 2016.
  • In 2016, an initial collections reduction shifted some materials to the Middleton Shelving Facility. The remaining active collections were relocated to Steenbock Library and inactive collections split between Verona and the Science Libraries’ shelving facility in late 2018.
  • Space repurposed to create the Grainger Design Innovation Lab, as well as new instructional, tutoring, and study space.
  • Alignment of engineering librarians’ work with the Science & Engineering Libraries (SEL).
  • Research and instructional support relocated to Steenbock Library.
