Mills Music Library in the time of COVID-19

April 8, 2020

Mills Music Library is closed for the foreseeable future, and all staff members are working from home, but we are still here to help you satisfy your music information needs! If you want to contact any full-time staff member, you’ll find contact information on our Staff page. You may also submit questions via the Ask Music form.

It isn’t possible to check out books, scores, or recordings right now, but current UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff may submit requests for materials to be scanned or digitized and delivered electronically. Please see the Remote Library Services & Research Resources page for a complete list of all that we in UW-Madison Libraries are doing to assist patrons in the time of COVID-19.

We especially encourage patrons to check Special Access to Online Resources in Response to COVID-19. Many publishers and content providers have temporarily unlocked some of their resources to support remote research, teaching, and learning during this period of disruption. These resources may not all be added to our catalog/article search so please refer to this page for access.

Much of what we have in our collections at Mills Music Library isn’t available online, but we have digitized many materials and made them accessible, in addition to subscribing to online databases for journal articles, book chapters, e-books, dissertations and theses, and streaming audio and video. We have selected a subset of these online resources to highlight on our home page, but there are more available via the Music page within the Database Library! We also encourage you to peruse our Digital Collections. Most of our digital collections are hosted by University of Wisconsin Digital Collections under the name Mills Music Library Special Collections. There, you can search the collections globally or individually.

Perhaps peruse our various sheet music collections and decide to learn a song or two, such as The Little Place That I Call Home, a song by Raymond Hubbell published in 1901 by Chas. K. Harris, Milwaukee, from our Wisconsin Sheet Music Collection, which is part of our Wisconsin Music Archives. Our Digital Collections are available freely to all, and don’t require a login with password.
