The Carbone Cancer Center (Carbone) Oral History Project was commissioned to commemorate its 50th anniversary. Carbone’s website offers a comprehensive overview its past & current work. The Oral History Program has compiled research to help conduct these oral histories; contact the OHP to gain access to that material. For more on the UW’s history of cancer research, check out Harold P. Rusch’s Something Attempted, Something Done: A Personal History of Cancer Research at the University of Wisconsin, 1934-1979.
The following interviews were conducted with current & former Carbone staff, as well as others instrumental in its history. In general, narrators describe their relationship to Carbone, as well as stories & anecdotes which further illustrate the institution’s history & importance. Note: if the narrator’s name is hyperlinked, one can click on it to access the full interview in our Digital Collections.

The Oral History Program would like to offer a special thanks to Dr. Howard Bailey for his desire to document Carbone’s history, as well as Carbone staff Joyce Jackson & Meredith Luschen for their help behind the scenes. We’d also like to thank OHP Staff: Evie Erickson, Madeleine Culpepper, Rachel Reichard and Troy Reeves for their work conducting & processing the interviews and creating this webpage. Finally, we would like to thank all of the narrators of this project for their generosity.
