John Karl Scholz served as interim chancellor for two months in 2022 between the administrations of Rebecca Blank and Jennifer Mnookin (from June 1 through August 3). Scholz was provost at the time and returned to that position when Mnookin became chancellor.

A native of Nebraska, Scholz graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., and earned his doctorate from Stanford University. He joined the UW–Madison Economics Department in 1988.

Scholz began serving as provost in August 2019 after six years as the dean of the College of Letters & Science.
