Citing Film and Audio Collections

Please note that a citation does not replace any necessary permissions for use of copyrighted materials. Please see our Duplication and Use Policy for more information.

Because films and videos come in a variety of forms, you may need to adjust your citation slightly based on the type of source you’re using. For example, a citation for a personal video, which has no production company, will look different than a citation for a Sophia Coppelia film. If the film is accessible online, you should include a URL and an access date. If the film is widely distributed, you do not need to include the name of the archive or library where you found the film. On the other hand, if the video is a one-of-a-kind item that can only or primarily be found at the archive you’re visiting, include the archive information in the citation. You want to provide the information a reader would need to find that source. If you are using UW Archives audio or film(s) in a presentation and/or for educational purposes, please use the following credit line: “Courtesy of the UW-Madison Archives”
