Donations and Funding

Donating Materials

The Madison LGBTQ+ Archive is a growing collection, focused on offering the most possible holistic reflection of LGBTQ+ communities in Madison and Dane County, Wisconsin. We are always looking to collect new materials and enhance our holdings. The current collections document a broad range of LGBTQ+ communities, organizations, and lived experiences. Our holdings include oral histories, personal papers, photographs, ephemera, organizational records, and much more. We accept a wide range of archival materials, both conventional and unconventional. Please note that donors and subjects of donation materials do not have to be affiliated with UW-Madison to donate.

The Madison LGBTQ+ Archive Collection Development Policy outlines what materials we do and do not collect, current gaps in our collections that we are looking to fill, and information regarding the donation process. Check the UW Archives Collection Development Policy for more general information about collecting and donation practices at large.

The Oral History Program is also looking to expand its collection of LGBTQ+ oral histories. The Program welcomes campus and community collaboration in their efforts to gather new stories. If you would like to nominate someone to be interviewed (a “narrator”) or are interested in being interviewed yourself, please complete the Narrator Nomination Form and send it to Distinguished Oral Historian, Troy Reeves. Under certain circumstances, some folks who agree to contribute their stories and memories to our collection will receive compensation for their time.

UW Archives staff are here to help donors through the donation process. University Archives has established Donation and Transfer Guidelines that we follow for the Madison LGBTQ+ Archive donations process. While each scenario might be different, we are here to ensure that all parties involved are satisfied with the end result and have all the information needed.

To inform us of a possible donation or to inquire about our collection practices, please contact the UW-Madison Archives at 608-262-5629 or via email.
