In Honor of Our Dear Friend, Richard W. Cable

February 28, 2022 By UW-Madison Special Collections

Today we’re sharing images from the Saint John’s Bible in honor of our dear friend, Dick (Richard W.) Cable, who recently passed away. Dick was a UW-Madison alumni and star athlete who generously gave back to our campus in many ways. In 2016 Dick donated a copy of the Heritage Edition of the St. John’s Bible to the Libraries and we fondly remember his many visits to Special Collections with family and friends in the years following. Dick shared his passion for this beautiful Bible and the story of its production with us, and we learned many things to pass on as we exhibit and teach with it.

Note the image of a bird in the sixth photo. This is just one example of a charming device the scribes used throughout the Bible to illustrate where to insert a line of omitted text.Images from volumes 6 and 7.The Saint John’s Bible. Collegeville, MN: Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, 2007-2012.
