Important service announcement for select CNKI resources

UW-Madison Libraries would like to inform our users about recent policy changes at the government level in the People’s Republic of China. The Cybersecurity Administration of China (CAC) has imposed new oversight requirements on Chinese publishers and exporters of information, resulting in the temporary suspension of full-text access and downloads for certain content types from the database provider CNKI:

• DISSERTATIONS
• PATENTS
• STATISTICS
• CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS

Of the suspended content types, two statistics databases from CNKI are impacted:

• China Data Insights 1949- (中国经济社会大数据平台) (descriptive info)
• National Population Census of China Database (中国人口普查数据库) (descriptive info)

This suspension took effect on April 1, 2023, and the resumption date will be announced later. Access to the China Academic Journals Full-text Database (CNKI) remains active.

Suggestions for locating alternative STATISTICS resources for Chinese Studies at UW-Madison Libraries include:

• Explore the resources in the East Asia | Database Library list
• Chinese Studies Research Guide
• Consult physical copies of yearbooks from China in our collection
• China Yearbooks Full-text Database – CYFD (temporary access) has some data overlap with the suspended China Statistical Yearbook Database, though data in CYFD is in .pdf format not .xls (Excel).
