Students: Accessing course materials through the libraries

What are course reserves?

Course reserves is a library service that provides a no-cost way to access course materials assigned by instructors.

Physical materials on reserve

  • Most print materials are available for in person checkout at College Library. In some cases your course materials may be on reserve at another library.
  • Books and other materials on reserve have a loan period of 2 hrs to provide access to multiple students in each course
  • Depending on the availability of materials at the UW Libraries and partner institutions, you may be able to request a title for a longer loan period. The libraries cannot guarantee your request will be filled.

Libraries Course Reading Lists

Customized web pages for a course that make it easy to find the right library resources.

Reading Lists contain:

  • links to records for print books with information on where and how to access them
  • links to online access to eBooks

Reading Lists do not contain:

  • supplementary readings not in the libraries collection
  • links to articles in the library databases

Streaming Media

  • Media licensed through the libraries can be found by searching the library catalog, your instructor may also provide you with a link
  • Your instructor may assign movies or other content only available for streaming with a subscription or rental fee (e.g. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime). You may be able to access no-cost alternative through the libraries.
  • The libraries may have DVD or CD versions of media. Viewing stations and equipment to play analog media on your own device are available at no cost through the libraries
