Returning Library Books and Equipment, Fall 2020

November 23, 2020

As the end of this semester approaches, we know many of you have library materials that you will need to return.

Note that having library items checked-out at the time of graduation does not prevent you from graduating.

Returning books and media

Books and media, including UW-System and Interlibrary Loan materials, should be returned to College, Memorial, or Steenbock Library in their book return. Books and materials that you got from any campus location can be placed in the outside book returns. Book returns are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

College Library Book Return

The book return is located on the south side of the building, to the right of the library entrance, facing Observatory Drive.

Memorial Library Book Return

The book return is located on the south side of the building, to the right of the library main entrance, facing the University Book Store.

The Memorial Library book drop is located to the right of the State Street entrance.

Steenbock Library Book Return

The book return is located on the east side of the building, to the right of the library entrance, facing Babcock Drive.

Returning equipment

If you can, return laptops and equipment to the location you checked them out from during open hours. If the location is not open when you have to return the equipment, you can drop it off at the College or Memorial computer lab and we will ensure it ends up in the right place. Please double-check that all cables, bags, and support materials are in the equipment bag before returning the item.

Returning course reserves

Course reserves items have a 1-day loan period. Return course reserves materials to the same library that loaned them.

Quarantine practices

All materials returned will be quarantined for 1 – 7 days. This means that returned items may stay on your record for a period of time due to quarantining and processing. You will receive an email return receipt for each non-equipment item as it is removed from your library account. Note that overdue fines generated during an item’s quarantine will be waived.

Mailing items

If you are not able to get to Madison to return items, they may be returned via postal service to Memorial Library. It is recommended that items be insured before sending via USPS, as patrons are responsible for materials until they reach the library. Please note that standard item replacement fees begin at $100.00 and equipment replacement fees can be much higher.

Address items to:

Memorial Library, Room 166
728 State Street
