Come eat and socialize, and then dance to the music of Die Tanzgeiger, a seven-member ensemble from Austria led by Dr. Rudolf Pietsch. Dr. Pietsch has done field and archival research with descendants of Austrian and German immigrants in Wisconsin, and has used materials in the Wisconsin Music Archives during visits to Mills Music Library. The performance will include material drawn from the Mayrent Collection of Yiddish Recordings, the Wisconsin Folksong Collection, and Local Centers/Global SoundsMills Music Library is proud to co-sponsor this event with the Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries, the Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures, the Mayrent Institute for Yiddish Culture, and the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies, with additional funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Die Tanzgeiger’s performance of traditional Austrian folk music promises to be inspiring, educational, and entertaining. View the video below for an introduction to the group.
