Excellence-in-Service Awards Presented

May 1, 2025

On Thursday, May 1, College Library recognized the exceptional work of two student assistants, Stephanie Kowalski and Sofia Weaver, lead workers in the library’s popular computer lab. Every semester the library selects two students who best embody our service ethos to receive the College Library “Excellence-in-Service” Award. The recipients provide outstanding public service to all patrons of College Library, demonstrate exemplary working relationships with other student assistants and staff, contribute to a welcoming learning and research environment, while epitomizing productivity, creativity, initiative, and independence.

Stephanie’s nominators noted that she “is great at balancing work culture and productivity.” They describe her as “always extremely respectful and helpful to patrons” while ensuring that “all staff around her are productive yet relaxed.” One supervisor recognized that Steph “is great at taking initiative to improve the overall library environment” and that she also fosters “an exemplary work culture among leads at the desk.” Another noted, “If a patron has a question, Stephanie will answer to the best of her ability and will often recommend a different approach if she feels it may better satisfy their inquiry/issue. When she’s unsure how to solve an issue, rather than providing an unreliable answer, she’ll readily check with others who may be more knowledgeable about that particular subject or provide the patron with some ideas of where they may be able to get more information. I believe her conduct in relating to patron interactions best fulfills College Library’s “Getting to Yes” goal without breaching computer lab policy.” Stephanie, a 2025 graduate, will definitely be missed in her unit.

Sofia has been described as a vital part of the team. One nominator remarked that “she shows compassion, empathy, and resourcefulness while assisting patrons and her fellow staff members.” Another noted, “Whether jumping in during a rush, solving unexpected problems, or simply brightening someone’s day, Sofia embodies what it means to provide excellent service. Her calm presence and strong work ethic make her a true asset to College Library – and her dedication doesn’t go unnoticed. As one coworker put it, “If Sofia’s here, I know it’s going to be a good shift.” One of her supervisors called out the key role Sofia has played in “improving service operations by being a consistently phenomenal trainer. Her thoughtful and approachable style has made a lasting impact on new and returning staff alike.” Congratulations to both Sofia and Stephanie — you are truly deserving of this award.

College Library extends its sincere appreciation to all of the student assistants who staff the library and who help ensure that we provide the best library experience for our patrons. The library could not function without their dedication and commitment.
