Student Award Winners

May 3, 2023

College Library is pleased to announce the recipients of its spring 2023 Excellence-in-Service Awards. These awards are given to student assistants who demonstrate outstanding customer service, exemplary working relationships, high productivity, initiative and who help create a welcoming learning and research environment at the library.

This year’s recipients are:

  • Jumana Tanner, a student lead in the library’s circulation unit
  • Emma Tauzell, a student assistant in the library’s computer lab

Jumana, who is largely responsible for decorating the library in recent years (especially at Halloween), was recognized for her positive attitude. One nominator wrote, “When I have a shift with Jumana, I know it’s going to be a good day. Her smile lights up the desk, she consistently goes above and beyond when assisting patrons, her initiative and creativity in decorating the library is inspiring and makes it a welcoming, enjoyable place to work, and she is a great teammate.” Another stated, “Jumana never hesitates to assist other staff members, and her willingness and ability to kindly, respectfully, and cohesively explain concepts to patrons and new student staff is admirable. I do not think it’s possible to overstate Jumana’s warm presence and the positive impact it has on the library, especially in relation to staff and patrons.”

Several of Emma’s co-workers in the computer lab nominated her for this recognition sharing that, “I remember one time she taught me how to change the paper in the poster printer but couldn’t get it to work. I saw how she went through all the steps she could to fix it, while staying positive and critically thinking about the next steps, eventually she contacted other leads and figured out she could straighten the end of the poster to fix the issue. By example she showed leadership skills, problem solving, but also modelled how to ask for help.” Another reported, “Emma is willing to do everything to make the lab cleaner and make sure the desk runs smoothly. Every time I work with her, she always spends about forty-five minutes going around the lab to restock everything and makes sure that everything is working.” We very much appreciate this attention to detail and Emma’s efforts in keeping the computer lab clean and functional.

The College Library is proud to recognize Emma and Jumana for their outstanding service. They are both valuable members of the library team and they make a significant contribution to the library’s efforts to provide excellent service to patrons and staff.

In addition to our award recipients, College Library would like to thank all of its student assistants for their hard work and dedication. We are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment at the library. It is a place where people can come to learn, explore, and connect with others. The library’s student assistants play an important role in creating this welcoming environment. They are consistently friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, and are always willing to go the extra mile to help library users.
