AMP Library Closure Update

As part of the UW-Madison Libraries response to budget reductions, the Libraries have made the difficult decision to accelerate the closure of smaller libraries that were previously identified for potential changes in the 2017 Libraries Facilities Master Plan. The Libraries’ staff is steadfast in helping faculty, staff, and students with their research and scholarship. Please continue to reach out for collaboration and partnership around your work.

Key Dates

  • February 13, 2026 (End of Day):

Access to AMP Library Collections

High-demand materials will be moved to Steenbock Library; other materials will be transferred to a shelving facility. Increasingly, you will see more books from AMP available at Steenbock and the Verona Shelving Facility (VSF).

We will continue to invest in print and online collections that support Astronomy, Math, and Physics. Please share your suggestions via our Request a Purchase form or send them to the Physical Sciences & Engineering Team.

  • While staff complete the collections move and to facilitate their relocation, books will not be available for checkout until they arrive at Steenbock or VSF.
    • All titles will remain requestable via the Library Catalog.
    • Titles that are found at Steenbock or another library location can be picked up at a different location of your choice or requested for digital scans of chapters/articles.
    • Titles that have not yet been moved can be requested by clicking on the “request a copy” button and will be fulfilled through Interlibrary Loan or from UW System.
  • The AMP Library bookdrop will also close at the end of the day on February 13th and will no longer accept returns.  Materials can be returned to any Open Return location. Alternative pickup and return locations near AMP include:

Accessing Content on the AMP Library Website in the Future

The AMP Library website will be retired on May 15, 2026. Much of its content is already available elsewhere on the UW-Madison Libraries homepage, and we encourage you to begin using these alternative access points now. Below is a quick guide to help you find databases, journals and math practice and qualifying exams. Contact the Physical Sciences & Engineering Team if you need help using the resources below.

Finding databases and journals can be done by searching for a specific title or by browsing by subject/topic on the UW-Madison Libraries website.

Search for a Database:

From the UW-Madison Libraries homepage

  1. Use the drop-down menu above the main search box to select  “Databases”
  2. Enter the name of the Database you’re looking for and submit your search

Detailed Guidance:

Browse Databases by Subject/Topic:

Browse Journals with BrowZine:

BrowZine allows you to browse, read, save, and monitor a subset of scholarly journals in your field on your mobile device or computer. If you have been using journal links from the AMP website, we recommend bookmarking the BrowZine equivalents below or setting up BrowZine on your mobile device. Please note that not every journal the Libraries subscribe to is indexed in BrowZine. Check the Library Catalog if the journal you need does not show up in BrowZine.

The Libraries will continue to partner with the Math Department to maintain access to course and qualifying exams. The exams will continue to be selected by the department for distribution and the Libraries’ will provide access to them on the Steenbock Library website. The exams can now be found under the Collections section on the Steenbock site.

Library Spaces

Our colleagues at the Physics Department and Facilities Planning & Management will be determining future use of the AMP Library space.

Those who used the AMP Library for study or collaborative space have additional options for study space nearby:
