The Globe/Global in Shakespeare’s Time

September 2016 through January 27, 2017

Title page of the Second Folio. From the Department of Special Collections, Memorial Library, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Special Collections exhibit designed to celebrate the visit to the Chazen Museum of a rare copy of Shakespeare’s First Folio situated Shakespeare’s work in a larger context — namely, understandings of the globe and the global in the 16th and 17th centuries. The exhibit featured many works on natural history and exploration from our holdings, our own copy of the Second Folio edition of Shakespeare’s plays, along with a copy of the Third Folio lent by Special Collections and Rare Books, Loras College Library, Dubuque, Iowa, a second Second Folio and a Fourth Folio lent by Special Collections, Golda Meir Library, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

“Thou earth, thou, speak!”
