An Honorable Legacy:The First Fifty Years of the Honors Program

Joyce Elizabeth Bromley

In 1958, UW-Madison President E.B. Fred was presented with a petition that had been signed by 172 undergraduate students. They were asking to work closely with professors, to be in small classes with other highly motivated students, and to have the opportunity to engage in scholarly research. Out of this challenge grew the Honors Program in the UW-Madison College of Letters & Science. An Honorable Legacy chronicles the first fifty years of this distinguished program.
