JRR Technology

People using the podcast equipment, microphones and Rode soundboard in the Journalism Reading Room
  • Mac workstations
    • The JRR has 6 Mac work stations for academic use.
    • Software includes both Microsoft Office for Mac and Adobe Creative Suite programs, as well as ability to print.
  • Podcasting and Audio Recording Equipment
    • The JRR has a table equipped with a RodeCaster II podcast soundboard and four microphones and headphones for audio recording sessions.
    • Users can connect the board to their laptops and/or cellphones to record or to include additional participants via phone call or video chat.
  • Go-Print Station
    • The JRR has 1 B/W printer available to students, faculty, and staff using the go-print system.

Flatbed Scanner

  • The Journalism Reading Room has an Epson WorkForce DS-50000 Document Scanner for patron use capable of scanning documents as large as 11″ x 17″.

Equipment Rentals

  • Students registered for Journalism classes that require the use of audio/visual equipment may check out materials from the Journalism Reading Room for class-related purposes.
  • The relevant class roster must be submitted to JRR staff before any equipment can be checked out by students.
  • Rentals last from the time of check out until the close of the next business day.
  • Users will be required to sign an equipment checkout contract and confidentiality waiver to use all audio/visual equipment from the JRR. See a copy of the equipment contract and confidentiality waiver in the upper right box.

Connecting to the Internet

Vilas Hall (including the JRR) is a wireless access point, so anyone with a UW NetID may connect to the wireless internet from within the JRR. For instructions on logging into the UW wireless internet, please see this DoIT page on connecting to the wireless network.

Wide screen Monitor

In the Frank Thayer Alcove, there is a wide screen monitor that students, faculty, and staff may use for presentations or meetings. The monitor can be connected to a laptop.

Food and Drink Policy

Food and covered drinks are allowed in the JRR, provided patrons take care to contain or clean up any messes and do not disturb other patrons.
