Accessing the Library

Entrances

  • The accessible entrance is located on the east side of the building off East Campus Drive
    • Enter through the Hembley Theatre entrance. There are automated buttons for the door. Then there is a lift that will take you down the 5 stairs into the building. From there you will proceed down the hall, turn right and go to the end of the hall and turn left. The Journalism Reading Room will be down the hall on the right.

Parking & Transportation

  • Visitors with limited mobility may be dropped off and picked up on Park Street near the intersection with State Street Mall.
  • The closest available parking for visitors with limited mobility is located in UW Lot #46, on the corner of Lake and Johnson.
  • Parking for people with limited mobility is also available on the ground floor of the State Street Campus Garage, located between State Street and University Avenue. The Lake Street side of this ramp is under construction, but the Frances Street side is available. See more information about the accessibility of City of Madison parking garages.
  • For both UW and City of Madison garages, you’ll park for free and have no time restrictions if you display a valid, state-issued DIS hangtag or DIS license plate. (Free parking ONLY applies when parking at a meter with a time limit of 30 minutes or longer.) See more information about general parking and transportation options.

Emergency / Evacuation Procedures

Tornado: If patrons aren’t able to get to the first floor, the inner hallway outside of the JRR or going out to the left and going into the inner hallway next to the elevators (where classrooms 2111, 2112, etc. are) is the safest area for them to stay away from windows and exterior doorways.

Interior Space Accessibility

Reservable Study Rooms and Spaces

The JRR Frank Thayer Alcove is a group study and meeting space. It is set up to create a collaborative work environment for closes, group study sessions, meetings, and presentations. The room contains 3 conference tables, 10 chairs, a wide screen monitor and podcasting station. https://www.library.wisc.edu/journalism/services-at-journalism-reading-room/spaces/

Quiet Spaces

The Journalism Reading Room is generally a quiet space.

Restrooms

From the entrance of the Journalism Reading Room, there are women’s and men’s restrooms to the right and left of the room. There is also a gender neutral and wheelchair accessible restroom to the left and down the hall. The building has directional signage.

Technology

The Journalism Reading Room has five Mac computers and one scanner that are wheelchair accessible. The library also has one public printing station.
