Student Coordinator for the Wisconsin Women Making History Project

Title: Student Coordinator for the Wisconsin Women Making History Project
Reports to: Office Program Associate
Position Summary: 15-20 hours per week

Our student workers are important to the success of our office. This position’s primary responsibility is to work closely with the Gender & Women’s Studies Librarian to support and coordinate the open access project, Wisconsin Women Making History (WWMH).

The Libraries at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are dedicated to the practices of social justice, diversity, equality, and respect among our staff, students, collections, and services. We strive to overcome historical and divisive biases in our society and embrace diverse points of view as assets to the fabric of our community. All positions will be called on to contribute to building this environment.

Duties Include:

  • Build on process/procedures for the addition of new profiles to the project, from initial nomination to final upload
  • Track nominations and profile completion
  • Communicate with nominators, researchers, writers, volunteers, nominees, partners, and other stakeholders
  • Communicate with Senior Editor on issues regarding editing and fact-checking profiles
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in research, writing, and editing
  • Experience with Excel and Word
  • Strong analytical and communication skills including interpersonal, oral and written forms of communication, seeking advice when necessary
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete detailed work both independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work 15-20 hours a week all year long (including summer)
  • Experience with WordPress
  • Interest in gender and women’s studies, women’s history, or librarianship
  • A commitment of 2 years

Pay rate: starting at $10/hr

Student Office Assistant Position Description

Title: Student Office Assistant
Reports to: Office Program Associate
Position Summary: 15-20 hours per week

Our student workers are important to the success of our office. This position’s primary responsibility is to support the staff of the Office of the Gender and Women’s Studies Librarian through various assigned administrative duties and specific attention to three resources: Feminist Periodicals (an online table of contents service), New Books On Women, Gender & Feminism (a new citation database of academic books), and WAVE (a film database).

The Libraries at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are dedicated to the practices of social justice, diversity, equality, and respect among our staff, students, collections, and services. We strive to overcome historical and divisive biases in our society and embrace diverse points of view as assets to the fabric of our community. All positions will be called on to contribute to building this environment.

Duties Include:

  • Assist in workflow and maintenance of digital collections on the Omeka site Feminist Periodicals
  • Search for web materials and check links
  • Enter Dublin Core metadata
  • Scan periodicals’ covers and tables of contents
  • Use Photoshop to modify scanned images
  • Dublin Core metadata entry
  • Provide bibliographical information for the WAVE film database and a new citation database of academic books
  • Gather, check, and compile bibliographical information for books using EndNote
  • Standardize, proofread, and correct existing material in the WAVE film database
  • Collect bibliographical information for new entries for the WAVE film database
  • Assist the database editor in converting print-focused material for use in a new citation database
  • Handle and route office mail
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Excellent close reading skills and aptitude for proofreading
  • High level of attention to detail and tolerance for repetitive tasks
  • Proficiency with online searching
  • Ability to work independently

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop
  • Availability to work a consistent schedule year round
  • Commitment of 1–2 years strongly preferred
  • Background in library and information science, English/communication studies, or gender and women’s studies
  • Experience using EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley, or other reference tools
  • Familiarity with databases
  • Familiarity with Omeka
  • Interest in publishing
  • Interest in the field of Gender & Women’s Studies

Pay rate: starting at $10/hr
