About

Rooted in the University Libraries, the UW-Madison Digital Scholarship Hub is a vibrant, collaborative space within Memorial Library where librarians partner with technologists, scholars, artists, students, and community members. Our mission is twofold: to advance research through access to cutting-edge computational tools, methods, and collaborative support—and to ensure that the development of these tools and technologies is informed by humanistic and social science perspectives. This reciprocal relationship is essential to building ethical, inclusive, and transformative knowledge systems.

Our Guiding Principles

The mission will be carried out with a shared set of core principles:

Collaboration, Community, & Relationality: The Hub will be built around relationships. It will provide space and support for cross-disciplinary collaborations and partnerships. The Hub will function as a community center that provides dynamic work spaces, hoteling options for partner units, and services that engage the broader public.

Openness: We invite anyone to be part of the Hub and we prioritize patience and generosity in our interactions. At our events and in our intellectual products, we adhere to open source principles like collaborative participation and shared responsibility.

Creativity: We will cultivate a space of active experimentation, interdisciplinary teaching, and cross-pollination of ideas. We will provide space, technical support, and programming to develop and incubate new ideas and accelerate innovation.

Developing Solutions and Enabling Advocacy: Programming will be oriented towards work that influences lives beyond its walls, foregrounding the Wisconsin Idea and work in the public good. The Hub will support nonprofit organizations, digital archives, and public humanities initiatives.

Responsibility, Stewardship, & Consent: We will work with a commitment to using digital and physical materials, and computing infrastructure in a way that protects people, animals, and the environment, always keeping in mind that technology is not inevitable and its harms are preventable.

Investment Opportunities in the Hub

Based in the heart of campus in Memorial Library, the Digital Scholarship Hub represents a vibrant meeting space for campus, downtown Madison, and the community. Named giving opportunities within the 15,000 square-foot space are available as are opportunities for programmatic support. Please reach out to Marianne Spoon if interested.

Partners

The Hub’s reach and identity are interwoven with key partners across campus, including the Department of Communication Arts, the Data Science Institute, the School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences, and the College of Letters & Science. The Digital Scholarship Hub will be a campus leader in advancing knowledge through critical engagement with digital tools, methods, and theories and will be a strategic partner in workforce development, grant-making, and fundraising. It will be a place where faculty, students, and community partners can come to use tools, and to question, shape, and humanize them. Our collections become data; our spaces become incubators; our work advances an equitable and just future for the university and beyond.
