Pickup by Appointment

Note that in-person services are available at reduced times and fewer locations until the start of spring semester.


Beginning January 25, campus is doing a soft roll out of the Badger Badge program. Read more here about how this impacts your use of the libraries.

Library patrons can put items on hold in the catalog and then schedule an appointment to pick up these items.

Items available for pickup

  • Items shelved at AMP, Art, Business, College, Ebling, Geology, iSchool, Journalism, Law, Memorial, MERIT, Middleton Shelving Facility, Music, Schwerdtfeger, Science Libraries Shelving Facility, Social Work, Steenbock, Verona Shelving Facility, Water, and Wisconsin Historical Society can be scheduled for pickup.
  • Not all items at these locations are eligible for this service.

Locations for pickup – Winter Break

  • Memorial Library: Monday–Friday 9 am–Noon and 1–5 pm.
  • Steenbock Library: Tuesday–Thursday 1–4 pm.

To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, face masks or face coverings are required in all campus buildings, including libraries. In addition, we request that you practice physical distancing of six feet apart.

How to setup items for pickup by appointment

  1. Search and find items in the catalog that are supported by Pickup by Appointment. Items that are available for Pickup by Appointment will indicate this on the right side of the catalog.
  2. Following the instructions in the catalog, submit a request for the item to be put on hold for you.
    • When this request is received, library staff will need time to locate the item and get it ready for you. This could take a few business days.
    • You can submit hold requests for multiple items that you want to pick up.
  3. Once the items are ready for you, you will receive an email indicating that you can schedule a pickup appointment.
  4. Using the link in the email, make an appointment to pick up your items.
  5. After you make the appointment, you will receive an email confirming your appointment and providing instructions on how to pick up your items.
Please don’t come to the library without an appointment. We must ensure we are meeting physical distancing guidelines, and are working carefully to ensure scheduled pickup times allow for minimal contact for all involved.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a limit to how many items I can schedule for pickup? expand_more

Yes. Up to 50 items for UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff. Up to 5 items for community members.

Why do I need to make an appointment to pick up items on hold? expand_more

Appointments allow us to comply with CDC physical distancing guidelines by controlling how many people will be at the library at any time.

When will other libraries' materials and locations be available for Pickup by Appointment? expand_more

When possible, we hope to expand this service to allow for other locations to participate. Currently Memorial and Steenbock are the only locations for pickups. Check back on this page to get updates.
