University Open Access Policies

Since 2008, hundreds of universities in the U.S. and around the world have adopted some type of open access policy.

Done well, these policies:

  • maximize authors’ rights to reuse their own articles and
  • encourage broad public access to research results

while ensuring that publishers:

  • have the rights they need to make articles available and
  • are adequately compensated for their contributions.

In recent years, faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have discussed adoption of an open access policy and this site is designed as a resource for those interested in better understanding these types of policies and their implications.
