Python and R Programming Workshops for Researchers

The Libraries have partnered with the UW-Madison Carpentries Community to provide Python and R workshops that teach essential programming skills to researchers engaging in computational analysis in myriad disciplines across campus

The workshops are a part of the UW Libraries Graduate Support workshop series, and are open to all UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff. The workshops introduce learners to Python and R software environments and continue into more specialized areas such as task automation, data manipulation, data visualization, and automated reports. The workshops also focus on cultivating welcoming and engaging learning environments through code-along instruction and multiple helpers ready to answer learners’ questions. Instructors and helpers are volunteers within the Libraries and in other campus departments. Both workshops use content from the Carpentries open source lessons. The workshops are provided in response to the growing need for computational research skills that we are seeing across campus and fill up very quickly. We also maintain a Google Group of registrants with which we share workshop updates and other data science training opportunities and events.
