Bi Wisconsin

For as long as Wisconsin has been inhabited, there have been bisexual people. This section highlights both the bisexual history of Wisconsin and current Wisconsin-based organizations that provide community and support to bisexual people. Bisexual history, especially in Wisconsin, is an underpublished, underresearched topic, which limits the amount of sources available for this section. This is not by any means a complete list of LGBTQ+ centers or services in Wisconsin.

Bi Wisconsin History

  • Bi?Shy?Why? – Bi?Shy?Why? was a bisexual organization based in Madison, WI that did bisexual advocacy and published the newsletter Bi-Lines from 1992 to 1996. Their newsletters featured bisexual printed material in the form of news and literature. Bi?Shy?Why? frequently wrote in local publications, including the Wisconsin State Journal, on issues that concerned both the bisexual and broader queer Madison communities. They worked with their parent organization The United and other UW-Madison organizations, such as the Ten Percent Society, to support queer efforts on the UW-Madison campus. Archived materials from Bi?Shy?Why? are available at both the LGBT Archive in UW-Madison’s Steenbock Library and the Wisconsin Historical Society.
  • UW-Madison Campus Women’s Center – The UW-Madison Campus Women’s Center, founded in 1983 and disbanded in 2020, provided a variety of services for female students at UW-Madison, including a bisexual women’s support group. There are some references to the group in the LGBT Archives; more information about them is needed.
  • Bi Definition – Bi Definition was a bisexual organization based in Milwaukee, WI founded in 1995 by a bisexual women’s group, named BiDesign, and an anonymous bisexual men’s group. Like Bi?Shy?Why?, they were a local organization looking to connect the Milwaukee bisexual community with resources and to provide awareness to monosexual people about bisexuality. They were involved in the broader Milwaukee queer community, attending PrideFest and hosting support groups. They also published their own newsletter, Bi All Means!, which provided coverage of bi news and advertised local events. They disbanded in 2004 after losing both attendance and financial support. Their records can be viewed at UW-Milwaukee’s Archives.
