In class with Go Big Read

July 26th, 2017 by

Chancellor Rebecca Blank and a review committee of campus faculty, staff and students have selected J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis as the 2017-2018 shared book selection for the UW-Madison campus.

UW-Madison instructors who are interested in using the book for their classes can request copies by contacting the Go Big Read office. A list of participating courses, thus far, can be reviewed here.

Through the lens of personal narrative, J.D. Vance examines the choices and sacrifices made by those living within economically-declining communities of the United States and reflects upon the value of mentoring relationships that can enable one to broker alternatives to a cyclical experience of poverty and its fallout.

Go Big Read is UW-Madison’s common book program where students, staff and the community are invited to read the same book then participate in a variety of related programs in-and-out of the classroom.
