Many publishers and content providers have temporarily unlocked some of their resources to support remote research, teaching, and learning during this period of disruption. Some of these resources have been incorporated into the library collections found through the library catalog or collection of databases, so that remains the best first place to search.
Following are resources of potential interest that may not be found in regular library searches. (Access to some previously available resources has been discontinued and those are listed at the bottom of this page for reference.)
Ancestry (authenticated access only) Previously only accessible from the WHS Library, remote access is now available to this database of family history and genealogy materials including census data; birth, marriage, and death records; immigration records and more.
JSTOR (authenticated access only) JSTOR is providing expanded access to journals and primary sources and more than 35,000 ebooks from major society and university presses. Access to selected ebooks ended on August 31, 2020. Journal and primary source access expected to be available through June 30, 2021..
Ohio State University Press, The Knowledge Bank All Ohio State University Press monographs, and the linguistics textbook language files, will be open and free to use through the Ohio State University Libraries’ Institutional Repository, The Knowledge Bank.
OpenEdition The resources provided here are always freely available, but may be of use during this time because of its large collection of French-language books and journals.
University of Michigan Press Ebook Collection will make all content in the University of Michigan Press Ebook Collection (UMP EBC) free-to-read for the remainder of the academic term. The UMP EBC contains the Press’s scholarly output published since 2012 as well as new books and older titles as they are digitized.
Broad License for Educational Uses Many societies, associations, and publishers that create content have given a general license for educational needs precipitated by the COVID-19 distancing in return for completing a form with the Copyright Clearance Center (list of participating publishers). For uses of this content that may not qualify as fair use this license will be enable additional free access for students.
Madison Public Library Virtual Library Card Madison Public Library has announced a virtual library card to meet the needs of our community while many patrons are practicing social-distancing by remaining at home and avoiding crowds. If you don’t already have a library card, you can apply for a virtual library card by filling out the Virtual Library Card Form. This card will grant access to all of their online resources including Wisconsin’s Digital Library’s eBooks, audiobooks, and movies.
Ebling Library Special Access List Ebling Library for the Health Sciences is maintaining a similar list of temporarily available resources which at times may include resources missing from this list.
Standards Several standard-producing organizations have released curated lists of standards.
5MinuteConsult is a fully integrated digital resource to help guide primary care professionals and clinical students in daily decision support. Available until May 31, 2020.
Acland’s Video Atlas of Human Anatomy (authenticated access only) can be used when dissections/cadaver labs are not available for students. Available until May 31, 2020.
AccessEngineering Engineering reference and teaching platform that delivers interdisciplinary engineering content integrated with analytical teaching and learning tools. Includes engineering handbooks and upper-level engineering textbooks, videos and a data visualization tool. Available until May 31, 2020.
American Mathematical Society Complimentary electronic “reserve” copies of their textbooks for students who do not have access to print books. Instructors should arrange for access through the “request desk copy” link on the specific textbook page. Available through the end of May.
Bates’ Visual Guide to Physical Examination Videos of head-to-toe and systems-based physical examination techniques for the (Advanced) Assessment or Introduction to Clinical Medicine course. Available until May 31, 2020.
BCC Research Market research reports including information such as growth trends, market opportunities, geographic breakdowns, and company profiles.
Bloomsbury Digital Resources Large collection of scholarly content in the humanities and social sciences. Includes primary documents, critical texts, historical archives, audio and video content. Available through June 30, 2020.
Cambridge Core Textbooks Access to over 2000 textbooks from Cambridge University Press in physics, earth science, life science, mathematics, engineering, and the social sciences and humanities. Available until June 29, 2020.
Cengage Unlimited Cengage textbooks available to students through an extended free trial.
China Data Online Available through December 30, 2020.
CNKI Access to CNKI resources have been extended to support Chinese studies of CEAL (Council on East Asian Libraries) members. Available through March 31, 2021.
DeGruyter Access to 75,000 DRM-free eBooks from participating publisher partners in the humanities, social sciences, medicine, mathematics, engineering, computer sciences, natural sciences, and law. Available through July 31, 2020.
Diaolong Full-text Database of Chinese and Japanese Ancient Books / 雕龙-中日古籍全文检索数据库 Available through October 31, 2020.
Digitalia Hispanica Provided free online access to a large collection of Spanish-language books and articles.
EBSCO databases for BadgerLink EBSCO temporarily extended access to several databases and ebook collections to all residents of Wisconsin through BadgerLink. Available until June 28, 2020.
EBSCO databases for CRL Members EBSCO extended access to numerous databases to members of CRL (Center for Research Libraries). Available through June 30, 2020.
Elgar Access to titles in Business and Management, Economics & Finance, Environment, Geography, Law, Public Policy & Politics, and Social Policy & Sociology. Access limited to titles currently held in the libraries’ print collection. Available through August 31, 2020.
Folger Shakespeare Library performances A videorecording of Macbeth and audio recordings of seven other performances. Available through July 1, 2020.
Gale Primary Source databases Gale extended access to numerous databases to members of CRL (Center for Research Libraries). Available through June 30, 2020.
GeoScienceWorld eBooks (public access version) Some publishers have made their content available in this comprehensive resource of eBooks for researchers in the Earth Sciences. Available through June 30, 2020.
Harvard Business Publishing E-Book Collection Includes the complete catalog of Harvard Business Review e-books of over 400+ monographs, newly published e-books, seminal works, and 150+ article compilations of the HBR Classics series.
IET Digital Library Ebook collection for the engineering and technology community covers reference and emerging topics in A.I., cyber security, big data, computing, healthcare technologies, electromagnetics, sensors, circuits, devices, systems, electrical, unmanned vehicles, mechanical, power, energy, sonar, radar, electronic warfare, and computer science. Project Euclid Online information community providing full text to independent and society journals in theoretical and applied mathematics. In addition to content UW Madison subscribes to, some publishers are making all of their content temporarily available here.
Project MUSE Project MUSE made scholarly content temporarily available for free. Among the publishers currently opting to make some of their content free are Johns Hopkins University Press (all books and journals), Ohio State University Press (all books and journals), University of Nebraska Press (all books and journals), University of North Carolina Press (all books), Temple University Press (all books), and Vanderbilt University Press (selected books).
