Many publishers and content providers have temporarily unlocked some of their resources to support remote research, teaching, and learning during this period of disruption. Some of these resources have been incorporated into the library collections found through the library catalog or collection of databases, so that remains the best first place to search.
Following are resources of potential interest that may not be found in regular library searches. (Access to some previously available resources has been discontinued and those are listed at the bottom of this page for reference.)
AccessEngineering (authenticated access only) AccessEngineering (McGraw Hill) is an engineering reference and teaching platform that delivers interdisciplinary engineering content integrated with analytical teaching and learning tools. This resource provides access to the latest editions of engineering handbooks and upper-level engineering textbooks, as well as hundreds of videos and a data visualization tool.
American Mathematical Society AMS is providing complimentary electronic “reserve” copies of their textbooks for students who do not have access to print books. Instructors should arrange for access through the “request desk copy” link on the specific textbook page. Vendor announcement. Expected to be available through the end of May.
Cambridge Core Textbooks (authenticated access only) Cambridge University Press is offering online access to over 2000 textbooks within physics, earth science, life science, mathematics, engineering, and the social sciences and humanities. Expected to be available until June 29, 2020.
SpringerNatureTextbooks 407 English-language textbooks. Expected to be available until July 31.
Bates’ Visual Guide to Physical Examination (authenticated access only)delivers head-to-toe and systems-based physical examination techniques for the (Advanced) Assessment or Introduction to Clinical Medicine course.
Kanopy (authenticated access only) With the support of select content partners, Kanopy have put together a collection of films to stream at no cost for the next 30 days. You can find a list of available titles here. This list may continue to grow as Kanopy connects with content partners in the coming days.
19th Century British Library Newspapers, Parts 1-5 (Gale) (authenticated access only) More than 160 titles and 5.5 million pages published from 1732- 1950. Includes articles and advertisements illuminating regional attitudes, cultures, and vernaculars beyond the London-centric national press. Expected to be available until June 30, 2020.
19th Century Collections Online, Parts 1-12 (Gale) (authenticated access only) Primary source collections of the long nineteenth century. Included topics: Asia and the West: Diplomacy and Cultural Exchange; British Politics and Society; British Theatre, Music, and Literature: High and Popular Culture; Children’s Literature and Childhood; Europe and Africa: Commerce, Christianity, Civilization, and Conquest; European Literature, 1790-1840: The Corvey Collection; Mapping the World: Maps and Travel Literature; Photography: The World through the Lens; Religion, Society, Spirituality, and Reform; Science, Technology, and Medicine; and Women: Transnational Networks. Academic Search Ultimate (EBSCO) (authenticated access) A combination of academic journals, magazines, periodicals, reports, books and videos meets the needs of scholars in virtually every discipline. Temporarily available to all Wisconsin residents through BadgerLink. Expected to be available through June 28, 2020.
African American Historical Serials Collection (authenticated access only) An archive of periodicals documenting African American religious life and culture between 1829 and 1922.Includes newspapers and magazines, plus reports and annuals from African American religious organizations, including churches and social service agencies.Expected to be available until June 30, 2020.
American Historical Periodicals, Series 1-6 (Gale) (authenticated access only) From the American Antiquarian Society, the collection includes unusual and short-lived magazines as well as better-known titles with long runs. Ranging in date from 1681 to 1922 (limited titles through 1940). Expected to be available until June 30, 2020.
Ancestry (authenticated access only) Previously only accessible from the WHS Library, remote access is now available to this database of family history and genealogy materials including census data; birth, marriage, and death records; immigration records and more.
Archives Unbound (Gale) (authenticated access only) Historical documents that cover a broad range of topics from the Middle Ages forward; from Witchcraft to World War II to twentieth-century political history. Particular strengths include U.S. foreign policy; U.S. civil rights; global affairs and colonial studies; and modern history. Expected to be available until June 30, 2020.
Arte Público Hispanic Historical Collection (authenticated access only) An archive of publications focused on U.S. Hispanic history, literature and culture from colonial times until 1960. Content is written, indexed and searchable in Spanish and English.
Atla Historical Monographs Collection (authenticated access only) An archive of religious and theological literature from the late 13th century to 1922. Intended for scholars seeking to understand religious thought and practice, particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Bloomsbury Digital Resources ((authenticated access only) Large collection of scholarly content in the humanities and social sciences. Includes primary documents, critical texts, historical archives, audio and video content. Expected to be available through June 30, 2020.
Business Source Ultimate (EBSCO) (authenticated access) Full-text journals, case studies, country economic reports and company profiles, as well as interviews with executives and analysts. Provides historical information and current trends.Temporarily available to all Wisconsin residents through BadgerLink. Expected to be available through June 28, 2020.
DeGruyter (authenticated access) Access to 75,000 DRM-free eBooks in the humanities, social sciences, medicine, mathematics, engineering, computer sciences, natural sciences, and law. Participating publishing partners and titles. Expected to be available through June 30, 2020.
EBSCO eBooks Academic Collection (authenticated access) Over 200,000 titles from a broad range of academic subjects and publishers.Temporarily available to all Wisconsin residents through BadgerLink courtesy of EBSCO. Expected to be available until June 28, 2020.
Elgar (authenticated access) Access to over 700 titles in Business and Management, Economics & Finance, Environment, Geography, Law, Public Policy & Politics, and Social Policy & Sociology. Access limited to titles currently held in the libraries’ print collection. Expected to be available through August 31, 2020.
Folger Shakespeare Library performances A videorecording of Macbeth and audio recordings of seven other performances are expected to be available through July 1, 2020.
Frick Art Reference Library Periodicals Index (authenticated access only) Archive of indexed art history journals covering Western European and American fine arts and some decorative arts. Indexes prominent international art history periodicals from the mid-1850s through the 1960s. Expected to be available through June 30, 2020.
GeoScienceWorld eBooks (authenticated access) (public access version) Some publishers have made their content available in this comprehensive resource of eBooks for researchers in the Earth Sciences. Expected to be available through June 30, 2020.
Harvard Business Publishing E-Book Collection (authenticated access only) Includes the complete catalog of Harvard Business Review e-books of over 400+ monographs, newly published e-books, seminal works, and 150+ article compilations of the HBR Classics series.
IET Digital Library (authenticated access only) Ebook collection for the engineering and technology community covers reference and emerging topics in A.I., cyber security, big data, computing, healthcare technologies, electromagnetics, sensors, circuits, devices, systems, electrical, unmanned vehicles, mechanical, power, energy, sonar, radar, electronic warfare, and computer science. Expected to be available until June 30, 2020.
JKBooks Series (authenticated access only) Ebook platform for JapanKnowledge. Offers a collection of publications containing specialized content through its database. Provides unaltered PDF page images of original books, while retaining ease of reading physical books in its display.
JSTOR (authenticated access only) JSTOR is providing expanded access to journals and primary sources and more than 35,000 ebooks from major society and university presses. Ebook access expected to be available through June 30, 2020. Journal and primary source access expected to be available through December 31, 2020.

Numérique Premium is providing temporary free access to 3500 French-language titles in humanities, social, legal, and political sciences.
Ohio State University Press, The Knowledge Bank All Ohio State University Press monographs, and the linguistics textbook language files, will be open and free to use through the Ohio State University Libraries’ Institutional Repository, The Knowledge Bank.
OpenEdition The resources provided here are always freely available, but may be of use during this time because of its large collection of French-language books and journals.
Policy Map (authenticated access only) PolicyMap is an online data and mapping application in use by over 160 universities across the United States. Our geographic data warehouse contains over 40,000 regularly updated indicators, notably health conditions and socio-economic factors that are exclusive to PolicyMap and indispensable for research and curriculum as universities move to a digital learning environment. Project Euclid (authenticated access only) Project Euclid is an online information community providing full text to independent and society journals in theoretical and applied mathematics. In addition to content UW Madison subscribes to, some publishers are making all of their content temporarily available here.
Project MUSE (authenticated access only) Project MUSE is making scholarly content temporarily available for free. Among the publishers currently opting to make some of their content free are Johns Hopkins University Press (all books and journals), Ohio State University Press (all books and journals), University of Nebraska Press (all books and journals), University of North Carolina Press (all books), Temple University Press (all books), and Vanderbilt University Press (selected books). RILM Music Encyclopedias (authenticated access only) A curated full-text collection of 57 titles published from 1775 to the present. Spans fields and subject areas of historical musicology, ethnomusicology and theory, with focus on topics ranging from popular music, opera, instruments, blues and gospel, to recorded music and women composers.
RIPM (authenticated access only) An extensive collection of rare, primary source music periodicals dating from the Early Romantic to the Modern Period. Includes Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals with Full Text and Preservation Series: European and North American Music Periodicals. Expected to be available through May 31.
University of Michigan Press Ebook Collection will make all content in the University of Michigan Press Ebook Collection (UMP EBC) free-to-read for the remainder of the academic term. The UMP EBC contains the Press’s scholarly output published since 2012 as well as new books and older titles as they are digitized.
Broad License for Educational Uses Many societies, associations, and publishers that create content have given a general license for educational needs precipitated by the COVID-19 distancing in return for completing a form with the Copyright Clearance Center (list of participating publishers). For uses of this content that may not qualify as fair use this license will be enable additional free access for students.
Madison Public Library Virtual Library Card Madison Public Library has announced a virtual library card to meet the needs of our community while many patrons are practicing social-distancing by remaining at home and avoiding crowds. If you don’t already have a library card, you can apply for a virtual library card by filling out the Virtual Library Card Form. This card will grant access to all of their online resources including Wisconsin’s Digital Library’s eBooks, audiobooks, and movies.
Ebling Library Special Access List Ebling Library for the Health Sciences is maintaining a similar list of temporarily available resources which at times may include resources missing from this list.
Standards Several standard-producing organizations have released curated lists of standards.
