HathiTrust, in response to COVID-19, has created an Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS). This service provides full-text online access to in-copyright works in HathiTrust that correspond to print works held by UW-Madison Libraries. The service is available to current UW-Madison faculty, staff, and students. HathiTrust estimates that 41.5% of our print holdings are now available digitally through this service.
Links to the HathiTrust site
Links to the HathiTrust online copy appear on catalog pages when HathiTrust has a copy.
Get access to the HathiTrust content by selecting “University of Wisconsin – Madison” on their site and logging in with your NetID.
Digital check-out is limited to one UW-Madison faculty, staff or student at a time. Checking out a copy reserves that copy for your use for one hour. As you use the text your reservation is extended one hour past your last activity, for example, turning a page.
If you are finished with a text, press the Return Early button to make the text available to other users.
The Available digital checkbox on the catalog search page is unaware of digital copies available through HathiTrust. You cannot refine your search by the availability of full-text online access through HathiTrust at this time.
Because digital check out is limited to one user at a time, a HathiTrust copy may not be a good choice for readings required of all students in a class. Please Ask a Librarian for the best way of making the required readings available online.
Titles held only at other UW-System Campuses
Our catalog includes print titles from other UW-System Campuses. Because UW-Madison does not hold these titles, we are not eligible to view HathiTrust’s full-text digital copy of them.
Credits and Thanks
We in the UW-Madison Library community are grateful that HathiTrust has made this service available to their members. UW-Madison Libraries were among the founding members of the HathiTrust and continue to support their mission of preserving and facilitating access to materials held in research libraries around the globe.
