How is UW-Madison supporting open access?

Faculty Senate Resolution on Copyright Retention

In March 2005, the UW-Madison Faculty Senate passed a resolution to persuade faculty to consider and support alternative forms of publication and explore new models of scholarly publishing ownership.

The Faculty Senate took action again in May 2007, when they passed a resolution encouraging faculty to control their copyright. The resolution also advocated for the use of a CIC-endorsed author addendum, thereby helping to ensure that their works are accessible to advance research and learning.

Supporting Open Access Publication

UW-Madison faculty are publishing in open-access journals such as those from all-open-access publisher Hindawi.

To help support faculty in choosing open-access publication venues, SCP administers the Open Access Publishing Support Fund, which covers a percentage of the cost of author submission fees for those open-access journals that charge them. To apply, fill out the online application form.

Through institutional memberships in Biomed Central, Public Library of Science (PLoS) and other select open access publication programs, UW-Madison authors are eligible to publish at reduced or no page charge.

Biomed Central (BMC)

UW-Madison authors are eligible for a discount on the BMC article processing charge as a benefit of the UW-Madison Libraries' membership in BMC. Please contact the SCP for more information regarding this discount. Find out more about publishing in BMC…

Nucleic Acids Research

Nucleic Acids Research became a fully open access journal in 2005. UW-Madison authors can publish at a reduced article charge. Check with NAR for the current charge.

PNAS: Proceedings of the National Academy of Science

Authors may opt to pay an additional open access fee to make their articles immediately available online upon publication. UW-Madison authors receive a 25% discount off the PNAS open access fee.

Public Library of Science (PLoS)

UW authors may publish at a reduced charge in PLoS journals. For general information about publication charges check the institutional memberships page. More detailed information can be found on the submission form for individual PLoS journals.

Archiving Articles, Conference Proceedings, Data, and More

Many UW-Madison faculty are archiving important research and scholarly materials in open-access repositories. See UW-Madison authors in the Social Science Research Network (School of Business, Law School) and EDIRC!

Faculty are invited to archive their scholarly materials in MINDS@UW, the University of Wisconsin System’s repository. Content already present includes research articles, journal backfiles, working papers, theses and dissertations, newsletters, image collections, and more. To add your materials, contact Dorothea Salo.
