Publishers' Policies Pertaining to Manuscript Submission
PMC Journals
"PMC Journals" are journals that submit all NIH-funded final published articles to PubMed Central. NIH Public Access Policy web site includes a list of journals. These submissions do not require author approval in the NIH Manuscript Submission System. To cite these articles prior to appearance in PubMed Central, use “PMC Journal - In Process” at the end of the citation.Example, before PMCID is available:
Sala-Torra O, Gundacker HM, Stirewalt DL, Ladne PA, Pogosova-Agadjanyan EL, Slovak ML, Willman CL, Heimfeld S, Boldt DH, Radich JP. Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) expression and outcome in adult patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Blood. 2007 April 1; 109(7): 3080–3083. PMCID: PMC Journal - In Process
Table of Publishers' Policies
This list is intended to provide basic publisher policy information. ALWAYS check your copyright agreement before signing and clearly state NIH-funded support, with grant numbers, in all manuscripts. Open Access Directory (OAD) includes an extensive list of publisher policies on NIH-funded authors maintained by the open access community. See also Sherpa/Romeo for publisher copyright policies and self-archiving.
| Publisher | Sample Titles | Policy |
|---|---|---|
| AAAS | Science | Policy: NIH authors may deposit the "accepted version" (accepted for publication in Science after changes resulting from peer review but before Science's editing, image quality control, and production). Authors of Science papers should set the time of public release at 6 months after final publication in Science. |
| American Chemical Society (ACS) | JACS, Journal of Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and more |
Policy: Option A: The ACS deposits the final, published article on the author's behalf, for immediate open availability via the ACS AuthorChoice fee-based option. Option B: The author deposits the final, peer-reviewed manuscript with NIH, for open availability 12 months after publication. Option C: ACS deposits on behalf of the author the final, peer-reviewed manuscript with NIH, for open availability 12 months after publication. |
| American Institute of Physics (AIP) | Applied Physics Letters, Journal of Chemical Physics, Physical Review Letters, and more | Policy: AIP automatically deposits final, published version, along with associated metadata, upon publication; will provide authors with the PMCID number once it has been assigned. Not listed on NIH site as PMC Journal. |
| American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology | Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC), Molecular & Cellular Proteomics (MCP) | PMC Journal |
| American Society of Microbiology | Journal of Bacteriology | PMC Journal |
| Blackwell (see Wiley Interscience below) | ||
Cell Press |
Biophysical Journal, Cell, Chemistry and Biology, and more | Policy: Cell Press will deposit to PubMed Central final peer-reviewed manuscript on behalf of Cell Press authors reporting NIH-funded research with a 12-month embargo. |
| Elsevier | Biophysical Chemistry, Chemical Physics Letters, Journal of Molecular Biology, and more | Policy: Elsevier will deposit to PMC the final peer-reviewed manuscript on behalf of authors reporting NIH funded research with a 12-month embargo. Authors should not post manuscripts directly to PMC. |
| Institute of Physics (IOP) | European Journal of Physics, Nanotechnology, Plasma physics, and more | Policy: Author may deposit final peer reviewed manuscript in PMC with a 12-month embargo. |
| National Academy of Sciences (USA) | Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA (PNAS) | PMC Journal |
| Nature Publishing Group | Nature, Nature Chemistry, Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, and more | Policy: Authors are encouraged to submit the author's version of the accepted paper (the unedited manuscript) with a 6-month embargo. Authors can opt-in to NPG's Manuscript Deposition Service in which NPG uploads the authors’ final version of the accepted manuscript on acceptance. |
| Oxford Press | Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica, DNA Research, Nucleic Acids Research, and more | PMC Journal |
| Protein Society (publishing partner of Wiley-Blackwell) | Protein Science | PMC Journal |
| Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) | Chemical Communications, Dalton Transactions, and more | Policy: Author may deposit the accepted version of the manuscript in institutional and other repository(ies) subject to an embargo of 12 months from the date of publication. |
| Taylor and Francis LTD | Journal of Carbohydrate Chemistry, Molecular Physics, Natural Product Research, and more | Policy: Author may deposit the accepted version of the manuscript in institutional and other repository(ies) subject to an embargo of 12 months from the date of publication. |
| Wiley Interscience (includes Wiley-Blackwell, Wiley-VCH) | Acta Crystallographica Section A, Advanced Materials, Angewandte Chemie - Int'l Ed., ChemBioChem, Chemistry: a European Journal, Journal of Applied Toxicology, and more | Acta Crystallographica Section A, B, C, D, F and Protein Science are PMC Journals. If an NIH grant is mentioned in the manuscript, Wiley will assume that the author wants the manuscript deposited into PMC. Author can also communicate this desire.Wiley will deposit in PMC the peer-reviewed version of the manuscript with a 12-month embargo. Wiley will notify the author when the manuscript has been sent to PMC. Authors should not deposit Wiley articles to PMC themselves. See Wiley-Blackwell NIH Public Access Mandate. |
