Moving Webpage Information into RefWorks using RefGrab-It

RefGrab-It is a tool that works with your browser to capture citation information from web pages. You can then view and import that data into your RefWorks account.

Installing RefGrab-it

Windows Users

Internet Explorer:

  1. In Internet Explorer, make sure Links is selected and displayed (View, Toolbars, Links).
  2. Login to your RefWorks account.
  3. Select Tools and RefGrab-It
  4. Right mouse click on RefGrab-It and select Add to Favorites.
  5. Locate the Links folder and select it. RefGrab-It will appear in the Name area.
  6. Click on OK.
  7. You may get a security challenge telling you that you may be adding something that is unsafe. Please say "yes".
Optional: Drag and drop the RefGrab-It link to the links area of your browser toolbar.
If you are unable to drag and drop the link, make sure your toolbar is unlocked (View, Toolbars, deselect Lock the Toolbars).

Firefox:

  1. Make sure your bookmarks toolbar is selected and displayed (View, Toolbar, Bookmarks Toolbar).
  2. Drag and drop the RefGrab-It link to your personal toolbar.

Note: RefGrab-It is not compatible with Netscape at this time.

Mac Users

Firefox and Netscape

  1. Drag and drop the RefGrab-It link to your browser toolbar.

Using RefGrab-It


You may need to temporarily disable any pop-up blockers while accessing the RefGrab-It results.
  1. Login to your RefWorks database if you have not already done so.
  2. When viewing a desired web page click on the RefGrab-It link in your toolbar or bookmark list.
  3. Citation data from the webpage will displayed on a temporary results page in RefWorks
    Optional: Use the More Info tab, if available, to include additional information about your webpage.
  4. Click on Import and OK.
  5. Your citation will automatically be imported into the Last Imported Folder.

    You may now view your record and move it to the folder of your choice.
