Owen J.
Gromme

Owen J. Gromme's classic Birds of Wisconsin comes to life again in a splendid new edition with completely rephotographed color plates and a new introduction by well-known ornithologist Samuel D. Robbins, Jr. This stunning revised edition features eighty-nine full-color portraits depicting the state's rich variety of native species and a section of new paintings showing birds in their natural habitat as well as a frontispiece described by Roger Tory Peterson as the "finest Bald Eagle composition ever painted."

This widely praised book is published in cooperation with the Milwaukee Public Museum, where Gromme worked as curator of birds and mammals for more than forty years.

Bird Portraits
This section of the book includes Range Maps to show the portions of the state where the species can be expected in a given season; Date Lines to indicate when a species may be expected somewhere in Wisconsin; Descriptions of Status to indicate various level of population or frequency of observation; and Nomenclature, the ongoing attempt to keep up to date with the American Ornithologists' Union's use of common and scientific names of birds.

Birds in Action and in Habitat
This section of the book includes seventeen new plates depicting oil paintings from the Gromme collection at the Marshall and Ilsley Bank in Milwaukee. These plates replace those included in the previous "Birds in Action and in Habitat" section and add a new and heightened view of Gromme's talents.
