BASIC SEARCHING

You will note that the database opens in a "basic search" level ...

screen capture of the GenderWatch database "Basic Search" template. There are three fields with numbers indicating that 1 = Words in Article, 2 = Publication Name and 3 = Publication Date. There are also three buttons on this screen to SUMBIT SEARCH, CLEAR ALL, and RESULTS TALLY. In addition, the number of articles per page can be modified through a drop down menu. In this example it is set at 10. The directions given by GenderWatch include: To search either: key in your searchword(s); click on the words to the left of the search box; or click the arrow to the right of the box to select terms from a list. Click Results Tally to see numerical results on the Search Screen. Click Submit Search button to perform search. (Also featured is the standard navigation bar listing from top down the following commands: Search, Sort, Hits, Print/Export, Pick for Search, Help, Home, Exit.

... and your only search options are to (1) find your search terms anywhere, (2) to search for a publication by name, and (3) to limit your search by date. Because "words-in-articles" may turn up lots of hits where your term appears, but only incidentally, it is not the best place to start searching a full-text database like GenderWatch, unless, of course, the database gives you no other option. GenderWatch does, however, through its "advanced search" tab.

screen capture of the GenderWatch search page with "Basic Search" crossed out and "Advanced Search" circled in red with an arrow pointing to it.

You will see that the advanced search option offers the possibility of subject heading searching as well as searching for words in the article titles.
