ADVANCED SEARCHING

Subject searching is usually the best choice for starting a search, since if you find a subject heading that fits your search, the results will really be "about" that subject. GenderWatch, however, did not orignially include subject headings for its holdings and is now adding them retroactively. This means that not all of the articles in the database have subject headings, so if you do a subject search, you may not retrieve all the articles that are actually about that subject.

Also, so far, the subject headings in GenderWatch are rather broad. One way to use them is simply to try putting a broad subject word in the search box next to the word subjects. For example, if you are interested in women's views of and efforts towards peace, doing a subject search for "peace" would be a good choice, and entering the word "peace" in the box turns up numerous hits.

screen capture of GenderWatch's Advanced Search template with eight fields including: Words in Articles, Words in Titles, Subjects [in this example "peace" is entered in the field], Publication Name, Publication Date, Author, Type of Article, and Type of Publication. Also included are the eight standard navigation buttons: Search, Sort, Hits, Print/Export, Pick for Search, Help, Home, and Exit.

Another way is to browse the subject headings available in GenderWatch, by clicking on subjects and either scrolling down the alphabetical list, or clicking on a letter of the alphabet to jump to words that begin with that letter. For example, if you are interested in immigrants from Latin America, jumping to the letter "I" you'd see a list of immigrants/immigration topics, including one on Latin America.

To select an entry, click on it. To select multiple entries, click first selection, then hold down CTRL key and click on each additional selection. Click on OK to enter selection(s).
