Art show in Memorial Library celebrates creativity of library staff

Posted 8/15/2012

MADISON, WI – The annual Library Staff Art Show shares the talent of University of Wisconsin-Madison library staff with the UW community. Started in 2006, the art show is sponsored by the Staff Development Committee and all current library staff and retirees are eligible to enter. This year ten artists showcase almost twenty different pieces of artwork with a wide range of mediums including photography, papier mache, wire sculpture, jewelry, and oil painting.

A well-attended reception was held on Tuesday, August 7 so that library staff could meet their fellow artists, congratulate them and ask questions about the artwork. Stop by the lobby of Memorial Library to view the art show exhibit, which runs until August 31.

The following staff members display work in this year's art show:

Rene Croushore
Angie Hoffman
Karen Lebouton
JoAnne Lehman

What is your position with the Libraries? I'm the Human Resources Assistant which entails Payroll & Benefits coordination and also student hiring.

What pieces are you displaying in the art exhibit? I'm displaying a bracelet made with pearlized seed beads in different shades of blue and gray.  I'm also displaying a necklace made with black and clear crystals and sterling silver.

How long have you done this type of artwork, and how did you get interested in it? When I worked at the Department of Revenue, a coworker of mine created her own jewelry. I loved her pieces and asked her to give me a lesson. We would make jewelry together on our lunch hours. That was about 10 years ago!

Any upcoming projects in the works? I'm always making something! I like to match up my jewelry with my clothing. I'm currently working on a necklace that is made with rose quartz in different shapes and sizes. I also like to make pieces to give away as gifts to friends and family.

What is your position with the Libraries? I work as an LSA Advanced in the Interlibrary Loan Office.

What pieces are you displaying in the art exhibit? What types of materials do you use? This year, I entered two pieces of photography which I took this past winter in Hawai'i. All I use is my camera and the photo paper!

How long have you done this type of artwork, and how did you get interested in it? I've been interested in photography forever. My father is a professional photographer who used to do all the still photography for the Badgers football team, and he instilled that interest in me at an early age. When digital photography came around, it made it so much easier to practice and hone skills he'd taught me through traditional film.

Any upcoming projects in the works? Oh, I'm always looking for subjects! I'm really looking forward to practicing my portraits this Fall when my first baby is born!!

Special thanks to Staff Development Committee member Peggy Smith, who contributed information for this article.
