UW-Madison Libraries staff help with BOOKLESS

Posted 2/03/2012

MADISON, Wis. - Saturday, January 28th saw a one-of-a-kind event in downtown Madison. For one day and night only, the empty, soon-to-be-renovated central branch of the Madison Public Library was home to hands-on art workshops and an art exhibition in which dozens of area artists displayed work. About 5,300 visitors made their way to the fundraising event, called BOOKLESS, for daytime and nighttime activities that included a community mural wall, a souvenir photo booth, a wall of library love notes, a basement dance party, and dozens of art installations and gallery spaces.

UW–Madison Libraries staff got involved with BOOKLESS in a number of ways: Tracy Honn from Silver Buckle Press worked with volunteers from Polka Press to facilitate a free hand-printing activity. Micaela Sullivan-Fowler, curator and librarian at Ebling Library for the Health Sciences worked with Brooke Norsted, outreach specialist from the UW Geology department, on a popular Library Wall of Love activity that saw visitors of all ages compose and post their memories of the central branch, as well as hopes and dreams for the renovated space and libraries in general.
