UW-Madison has chosen Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario for this academic year’s common book program, Go Big Read. The main objective of Go Big Read is to engage members of the campus community and beyond in a shared, academically focused reading experience. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to participate by reading the book, and taking part in classroom discussions and campus events.
Based on the Los Angeles Times newspaper series that won two Pulitzer Prizes in 2003, one for feature writing (Sonia Nazario) and another for feature photography (Don Bartletti), Enrique’s Journey is the account of an Honduran teenager who travels from Honduras to the U.S. on the top of freight trains to find his mother, who had left eleven years earlier to provide a better life for her children. This book puts a human face on the ongoing debate about immigration in the United States.
This is a call for submissions of creative pieces in visual or literary forms. Any works entered must be the artist/author’s original work on any topic related to Enrique’s Journey. Works submitted can be literary, visual, or mixed media. No video or audio works will be accepted.
