First Wisconsin Science Festival to Include UW-Madison Libraries

Posted 9/16/2011

MADISON, Wis. – Students, faculty, staff and members of the community will have the opportunity to “Ask a Librarian” at the inaugural Wisconsin Science Festival, to be held at various locations throughout Madison September 22–25. The libraries’ table will be found in the heart of the campus scientific neighborhood, at the Town Hall/Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. Festival attendees can meet library staff and learn about useful resources in the sciences and beyond.

Sponsored by the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) and many other partners, the first Wisconsin Science Festival brings together scientists, artists, and the community to promote exploration, discovery, and fun. According to the event’s website, “this ground-breaking festival explores the natural world in new and exciting ways from cutting-edge biotech research to the science of ice cream, and from an artist’s view of life on the nano level to the physics of football.”

Visitors will have the chance to engage with interactive exhibits, hands-on workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and have conversations with leading researchers and creative thinkers—including librarians! Erika Sevetson of Ebling Library for the Health Sciences and Karen Dunn of Steenbock Library have been planning for the event. Says Dunn, “I see this as a great opportunity for librarians to interface with campus research/staff partners and the general community to share libraries information, answer reference questions and demonstrate resources.” Laptops will be at the table to give visitors hands-on practice using online tools. Plenty of souvenirs, like posters, door-hangers, and pens/pencils will be on hand to promote library services and resources. Most importantly, visitors will see what Dunn describes as “the upbeat and welcoming presence of our library staff!”
