Donate Books to the Friends of the UW–Madison Libraries

MADISON, Wis. – While there is no shortage of books in UW–Madison’s campus libraries, the Friends of the UW–Madison Libraries report that they are running out of books for their semiannual book sales.
Each sale moves approximately 15,000 books into new owners’ hands, and the Friends sell not only books, but LP and CD recordings, audiobooks, and DVDs as well. With two sales a year, the Friends organization is constantly collecting and sorting books for these events, and more books and other materials are necessary to keep up the supply.
These sales are well known throughout the region, and dealers come from Wisconsin as well as from surrounding states to take advantage of the high-quality books that are traditionally offered at the sales. The selection is good and the prices reasonable, another reason the sale is very popular with students, faculty, and staff. Proceeds from the Friends book sales fund grants to UW libraries for acquisition and conservation of library materials, as well as grants-in-aid to researchers in the humanities who come to Madison to work with Memorial Library’s world-renowned collections.
Many book donors are professors or individuals who feel strongly about their libraries and are delighted to learn that the university’s book selectors and bibliographers carefully examine all donations before the sale, often finding books that are not in the libraries’ collections, or extra copies of popular titles. These are added to the campus libraries’ holdings, enriching the resources available to all.
Books are collected year-round. If you have books to donate, please phone the Friends at 265-2505 or e-mail friends@library.wisc.edu. The Friends can tell you how to deliver books, and how to claim your donation as an income tax deduction. The Friends can even arrange to pick up your books if you cannot deliver them yourself. So take a look on your bookshelves and in your attic or basement. The Friends of the UW–Madison Libraries are eager to have your books!
