Peter Boguszewski, Jeanette Casey Named 2011 Librarians of the Year
Posted 4/22/2011
MADISON, Wis. –The 2011 Librarians of the Year were announced during the annual awards banquet held in Lathrop Hall. The recipients of this year’s honors were Peter Boguszewski, Library Systems Administrator, and Jeanette Casey, Director of the Mills Music Library.
Peter Boguszewski received the Librarian of the Year award given to a librarian who has worked more than ten years at the Libraries. He has been serving as Library Systems Administrator since 1999. He has been involved in almost every major and minor project that has been worked on by the Library Technology Group, including developing the public computing platform, staff computing platform, virtual server network, and network storage for the UW Digital Collections Center. This led one colleague to call Pete the “Go-To, All Knowing Energizer Bunny of Computing,” adding that “Pete can do more
in a single year than most do over the span of 10 years.” He was recognized as a
forward thinking leader who gets things done.
During his time in LTG, he has superbly managed the day-to-day operation of 800 PCs and over 30 servers that make up the LAN. Pete’s colleagues enthusiastically credit him for the library network’s unparalleled stability and few network glitches or outages. He
has also shared his technological expertise by actively participating on many library and campus committees. Through dedication and professionalism, Pete has created strong working relationships with many campus entities, such as DoIT. Also praised was his unique ability to build bridges between hardware system administrators and software developers and his “unmatched level of enthusiasm for making the UW-Madison Libraries a top tier academic research library through his contributions to library information technology. “
Jeanette Casey won the award for Librarian of the Year for under 10 years of service. Jeanette has served as the director of the Mills Music Library since 2007. Prior to taking the position at Mills, Jeanette worked for the Chicago Public Library for nearly 20 years and Northwestern University for 7 years. In her relatively brief time as director of Mills, Jeanette’s ambition, vision, and collegiality has been apparent in both her work in the Libraries and throughout campus. A short list of her accomplishments includes: revitalizing Mills’ relationship with the School of Music; overhauling Mills’ operations and collection management policies; expanding circulation policies to allow anyone with a UW Madison ID to check out CDs; and collaborating with the Library Technology Group and UW Digital Collections to create a “digital jukebox” that will provide online access to song titles from recordings that were previously inaccessible to users.
Jeanette taught graduate level courses in music librarianship at Dominican University in River Forest, IL for several years and has lent her expertise to the School of Library and Information Studies and the School of Music to help create a course on music librarianship. One of Jeanette’s nominators summed her up well with the following quote: “Jeanette is, by all accounts, a valued colleague, an outstanding supervisor, a diplomatic liaison to our patrons and staff, and an advocate for the patrons we serve. She brings tremendous energy and great insight to all that she takes on, and I can say without reservation that she has, in a relatively brief period, achieved performance levels beyond any reasonable measure of expectation.”
