E-Reader Pilot Begins at College Library

MADISON, Wis. – College Library has launched a pilot program to gauge student interest in reading digital books on Kindles and iPads. The library now has ten pre-loaded e-readers available for circulation. Each e-reader features over sixty titles selected to meet undergraduate recreational reading interests, from classics like War and Peace to modern parodies such as Android Karenina. A full list of the titles currently on the devices can be viewed at Library Thing. This project is being supported by the Libraries’ unrestricted gifts and endowment funds.

To request a pre-loaded e-reader, patrons submit an online request form and are notified when a device is available. One unique aspect of this pilot project is the opportunity for undergraduates to actually help build the library’s collection of e-books. With every reservation, undergraduate students are allowed to suggest up to $20 worth of new titles for purchase. In the week since this project began, nearly a dozen new e-books have been added to the collection, including such popular titles as:

Decision Points by George W. Bush
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Idoru by William Gibson, and
True Notebooks: A Writer's Year at Juvenile Hall by Mark Salzman

Due to the already-high number of requests, there is a waiting period for those interested. At this time, the e-reader devices can be checked out for a two-week period without renewal.

As with laptops and other equipment, users are responsible if the e-reader is lost or damaged. Patrons may be asked to provide feedback on the e-reader pilot project.

For more information, see the College Library’s About the E-Reader Pilot.
