Kelli Keclik and Lynette Korenic Named 2010 Librarians of the Year
Posted 04/16/2010
MADISON, Wis.- The 2010 Librarians of the Year were announced during the annual awards banquet held in Lathrop Hall. The recipients of this year’s honors were Kelli Keclik, the Late Evening Public Service Librarian at College Library, and Lynette Korenic, the Art Librarian at Kohler Art Library.
Lynette Korenic received the Librarian of the Year award given to a librarian who has worked more than ten years at the Libraries. She has been
serving as director of the Kohler Art Library since 1999. During her tenure as director she has worked vigorously at collection building while at the same time she has greatly improved user services. Her collection building includes the Artists’ Book Collection which is considered to be one of the most significant of its kind in the country. She has also worked hard to cultivate a next-generation of art librarians by mentoring SLIS students at the Art Library Society conference, trying to establish a SLIS course in Art Librarianship, and working with SLIS and the Art History Department to create a dual degree track in those areas here at the UW. Lynette is involved in library committees on campus and nationally. She is also one of the organizers for the Evolving Directions lecture series that brings faculty to the libraries from around campus to discuss their current research needs and practices. One of her nominators wrote of her, "Lynette Korenic has really vitalized the art library and brought it into the 20th, then 21st century. I have enormous respect for her and her contributions to the art library, to GLS, and to the profession of art librarianship."
Kelli Keclik won the award for Librarian of the Year for under 10 years of service. Kelli studied both English and Social Welfare at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an undergraduate with aspirations to attend law school upon graduation. A chance reading of an article about “young hip librarians in New York” altered her decision and pointed her towards the path of library school. Kelli’s nominators absolutely gush when discussing her original thinking and innovations. To quote, “she drives change. She embraces new ideas and thinks about how they can improve service. She balances cost against function and user need.” There are many projects and initiatives that would not exist if it weren’t for Kelli’s vision and drive including: finals week events, the undergraduate research award, College Library’s video game collection, the College Library Improvement Committee, and numerous research guides. One example that deserves highlighting is last September’s Welcome Week House Party at College Library. Under her leadership and guidance, Kelli planned, got grant funding for, and saw a team through a hugely successful and fun event. To quote one nominator, “Kelly is, quite simply, amazing.”
