Madison Gas & Electric and Steenbock Library Partner Together for "Portable Energy Meters "

Posted 03/11/2010

MADISON, Wis.- Portable Energy Meters are available from UW-Madison’s Steenbock Library. Thanks to a unique partnership with Madison Gas & Electric (MGE), Steenbock Library now has portable energy meters called “Watts Up?” for circulation. This program allows all UW-Madison faculty, staff, and students the opportunity to monitor energy use in their working and living spaces. The portable energy meters can be used to monitor the electricity consumption and cost of plug-in electronics and appliances at home, work, or for use in classrooms and research projects.

Instructors and students specifically in the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences, the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, and the College of Engineering, will be using the energy meters for conducting class research projects.

The meters are available for checkout using the “Place Requests” link in Madcat, similar to checking out a book, from Steenbock Library. A meter may be checked out for up to two weeks at a time. The meter comes in a carrying case with an operator’s manual. MGE’s Energy Meter Web site features a video demonstrating the use of these tools.

More information about this program is available on the Steenbock Library Web site.
