Culture of Sharing: Libraries sponsor student forum on the free culture movement
Posted 3/27/2008
MADISON, Wis. – The culture of sharing made possible by the technologies of the Internet is the focus of a UW-Madison Libraries symposium on April 12.
The event, which will be at 3 p.m. in Memorial Union TITU, will address questions of what is legal and what rights and responsibilities students have in file sharing, sampling, open access publishing and other sharing activities.
Breakout sessions include:
- Remixes and mash-ups: YouTube, sampling and legal repurposing
- Peer-to-peer file sharing: what can you do?
- Sharing your work: including open access publishing options
- Open source: sharing programming solutions
- Digital rights management: CDs, DVDs, iTunes and more
The program includes a keynote by Nelson Pavlosky, an activist from the national student organization Students for Free Culture. The international chapter-based student organization promotes the public interest in intellectual property and communications technology policy.
Gavin Baker, co-founder of the University of Florida’s chapter of Students for Free Culture, will conduct a wrap-up session following the program. Pavlosky and Baker will then meet with interested students to discuss the development of UW-Madison’s own chapter of Students for Free Culture.
“We hope this program helps create a community of interest in these issues among students and that the forum will be one of many discussions and programs related to copyright and access,” says Carrie Nelson, associate academic librarian at College Library.
The primary sponsor of the program is the UW-Madison Libraries. Cosponsors include Associated Students of Madison, the Dean of Students Office, the School of Library and Information Studies, DoIT, and the Graduate Student Collaborative. The national cosponsor is the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition.
