MADISON, Wis. -- The UW-Madison Librarians' Assembly has named Steven Frye and Jane Bannerman, both of College Library, as the 2007 Librarians of the Year. Frye and Bannerman were honored with the awards at the Assembly’s annual High Tea, Thursday, April 24.
Two Librarian of the Year awards have been given to unclassified staff members each spring since 1989 to honor their exceptional contributions to the General Library System. One award recognizes a staff member who has worked in GLS fewer than 10 years, while the other recognizes a staff member who has worked in GLS more than 10 years.
Frye received the award for those with less than 10 years of service to the GLS. As the head of College Library's Reference and Information Services, he is responsible for coordinating everything from desk staffing to staff training to service improvements. Recently Frye was asked to chair a new Council of University of Wisconsin Libraries committee charged with overseeing user services across UW System related to reference services, information literacy and distance learning, issues about which Frye is passionate.
"Steve is a keen advocate for users and their information needs and repeatedly demonstrates a strong commitment to providing quality services to users," said award presenter Jean Ruenger-Hanson, who was a 2006 Librarian of the Year. "Steve brings to the job an enthusiasm for improvement and for pushing the boundaries of what’s possible."
Bannerman has worked at College Library since 1972. Her first job was to develop a library instruction program. Over the years she has worked on many projects, including the author file, the vertical file, displays, reference, circulation, and security. Bannerman has dedicated a lot of time and effort to making work life better for library staff, and has worked in staff development both in their own library and for the GLS as well. Bannerman is very active in campus committees and is a contact person for the McBurney Center. She has also been a strong proponent of library staff recognition, helping create the very Librarian of the Year award that she now has received.
"In their letters of nomination, colleagues all spoke of Bannerman’s dedication to working with students. Her good humor, enthusiasm, a positive approach have earned her the admiration of her co-workers," said award presenter Kerry Kresse, who was also a 2006 Librarian of the Year.
Bannerman was selected from among those with 10 years of service or more.
