Edible Books, April 12, opens coming National Library Week in campus libraries
MADISON, Wis. – An Edible Book Festival, Thursday, April 12, in Memorial Library on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus kicks off National Library Week, which begins that weekend. The event at 3-5 p.m. Thursday is the first first of many treats offered as part of the coming week's celebration.
The whimsical festival, cosponsored by the School of Library and Information Studies at the UW-Madison and Memorial Library, celebrates (and pokes fun at) literature, art and food in equal measure by creating edible book-shaped or book-themed art that will be displayed, judged and served.
Food critic Raphael Kadushin, a contributing editor at Bon Appétit magazine and senior acquisitions editor at the University of Wisconsin Press, will be judging the entries. A People's Choice award will also be given, based on audience votes. Prizes have been contributed by the University Book Store.
The festival, which began in 2000, is an international event held on or near April 1 in honor of the birthday of French gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826), famous for Physiologie du goût, a witty mediation on food. Participation has spread throughout Europe and also includes the United States, Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand and Russia. Hong Kong is participating for the first time this year.
This second Annual Edible Book Festival on campus will be held in room 460 Memorial Library.
Entry applications will continue to be accepted through Monday, April 9. For more information, contact Todd Bruns at tbruns@library.wisc.edu or Dineen Grow at dgrow@library.wisc.edu, or call (608) 843-3875.
