Reading of genocide play published by Parallel Press set for March 26
By Michael WorringerLibrary Communications
MADISON, Wis.-- A staged reading of If the Whole Body Dies: Raphael Lemkin and the Treaty Against Genocide, UW-Madison Professor Robert Skloot’s one-act play, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, March 26, in the Hemsley Theatre at Vilas Hall, 821 University Ave. The reading is sponsored by the UW-Madison Libraries, which published the play through its imprint the Parallel Press, the Friends of the UW-Madison Library and the University Theatre.
Through humor and sadness, the play dramatizes a day in the life of Raphael Lemkin, the man who coined the word genocide and whose life mission was to have the United Nations ratify a treaty against genocide.
Skloot has taught and directed plays at UW–Madison since 1968. He is the author of The Darkness We Carry: The Drama of the Holocaust and the editor of the two-volume anthology, The Theatre of the Holocaust. He served as a Fulbright Professor in Israel, Austria, Chile and the Netherlands, and he holds a joint appointment in the UW–Madison’s Mosse-Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies.
The reading of If the Whole Body Dies will follow an introduction by Ken Frazer, interim chief information officer on campus, and opening remarks by Skloot. A discussion, book signing and reception will close the evening. The lobby opens at 6:15 p.m., the theatre opens at 6:45 p.m. and walk-ins are welcome after 6:55 p.m.
Request free tickets in advance by calling Vilas Hall Box Office Monday-Friday from 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at (608) 262-1500.
