MADISON, Wis. -- Spend an evening at the Wisconsin Book Festival with Ted Kooser and Jane Hamilton, two nationally acclaimed Midwestern writers. With sponsorship from University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries and its Friends organization, the Wisconsin Humanities Council brings both Kooser and Hamilton to speak at the Orpheum Theatre, 216 State St., at 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20.

Kooser was the 2004 poet laureate appointed by the Library of Congress. He has been writing and publishing poetry for more than 40 years. Born in Iowa and currently living in Nebraska, Kooser is the first poet laureate to hail from the Great Plains. He has been featured on National Public Radio numerous times, and his weekly newspaper column, "American Life in Poetry," appears in many newspapers around the nation, including The Capital Times in Madison. In addition, his book "Delights and Shadows" won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for poetry.

Hamilton is a best-selling author from Rochester, Wis. Her first novel, "The Book of Ruth," won the PEN/Ernest Hemingway Award for best first novel and was a selection of the Oprah Book CLub. Her second novel, "A Map of the World," was also a selection of the Oprah Book Club and an international bestseller. Hamilton will read from her new novel, "When Madeline Was Young," a tale of a family moving through the routine frustration of domestic life, personal tragedy and global strife.

This event is open to the public at no charge.
