Bucky Badger promotes reading in new poster

MADISON, Wis. —If you want to be a Badger, just read along with Bucky.
While those aren’t quite the words to the song made famous by the University of Wisconsin marching band, the phrase does capture the spirit behind a new poster and matching bookmark cosponsored by the UW–Madison Libraries and the Wisconsin Center for the Book.
In the poster, Bucky stands against a bookcase reading about great moments in the history of Camp Randall Stadium, the home of the Wisconsin Badgers football team. Bucky’s universal appeal among children and adults alike makes him the perfect choice for the libraries’ READ campaign.
The Bucky READ poster debuted to campus in a library supplement of the Sept. 20, 2006, edition of Wisconsin Week. The poster will make its national debut Sept. 30 in Washington, D.C., during the National Book Festival, which is hosted by First Lady Laura Bush. One thousand copies of the poster will be distributed on the National Mall during the festival.
Locally, the libraries are teaming up with the UW–Madison Athletic Department to use the poster to encourage reading in Madison schools. Bucky READ posters and bookmarks will be provided to students through Bookin' It With Bucky, a program in which Bucky and members of the university’s athletic teams visit classrooms and read to fourth-grade students.
The READ poster promotion was initiated by a staff development committee in the UW-Madison Libraries and is based on a similar effort in the UW–Madison Law Library.
Senior Artist Daniel Joe of UW–Madison Library Communications designed the poster and bookmark. The project was paid for with private support. Contact bucky@library.wisc.edu for copies.
